Another Map View

I felt clever with blogpost titles today. For those that play with their map settings a lot, there is nothing new here.

When I was going through mail of little things and various things sent to me I noticed one particular thing I could answer immediately.
Malkin Devan said:
Maps are quite hard to read in this game, add a background clearly marking sovereignty.
I asked him if this was what he wanted:

I'm going to give him credit for this one because when I discussed the intuitive UI features with others they stared at me in shock, not knowing that this particular function existed. I know about it from a conversation in Eve Uni chat once when someone said that the only way to view the map was tiled.  I personally love the three dimensional starpmap and had no idea what they were talking about when they said a tiled map. I dug through the UI and found it.

The bright points on the second image are areas of Sov change. While this is not a map like dotlan, it is a very flexable tool and frankly, its pretty as hell to look at.

In the MoMA exhibit that was shown at Fanfest I believe, CCP recorded a 24 hour view of the star map and sped it up. Over that twenty four hours the map glows and changes colors as each time zone starts and ends. Its absolutely beautiful and I can't find it because I suck at searching video. It is probably in the keynote. It was amazing however and stunning.

I need to write some further chatter on UI thoughts. When asked about one of the most important things needed in Eve, I said the UI. The UI as in the User Interface that cover's all aspects of our interaction with Eve. There is way to much of Eve that we miss out on becuase of it. But, that is the start of another blog post.

Comments

  1. I am not sure how useful the maps are, at least to my day-to-day operations. (Except maybe the view that shows where other fleet members are when I am late and trying to catch up.) But as kind of a nerd tool to goggle at, I find the various map views to be almost a game of their own. I like the view that shows me where I have left all my stuff over the years along with the systems I have visited.

    1. I agree. It very much is a mini-game. I spin it around sometimes because it is so pretty and detailed.

  3. Hmmm... The only thing I really 'use' the ingame map for is intel really. We are spending more time ratting and PvPing in low nowadays instead of just passing thru when hauling L&S out and fuels etc. in.

For ratting and PvPing, we check rats kills, players in space, in station etc. so we can hopefully find some fights, and for the other, we for check gates camps, kill spikes, players in space, in station, etc. are in order to avoid them when making store runs.

That and the occasional look at where I've been and such I don't use the ingame map at all, I use Dotlan for trip nav and detailed intel and Chruker's Online Section for well.... it's Chruker's, not much you can't find there.

You know what map I really do like? This one.

Maybe one day!

It was a random question that I knew the answer of. I have 'Sugar' as a keyword so it highlights green and catches my attention. This made me chuckle. Maybe I'll have to go and see what it is like to shoot a ship one day? I could not help but smile. Basi suggested that I put my Titan killmail in my bio and assert my badassery. I figure, naw. It was a roll of the dice that landed me that kill mail. It doesn't define me as a person. Bios are interesting. The idea of a biography is a way to personalize your account. You can learn a lot about a person by what they choose to put in their bio

Taboo Questions

Let us talk contentious things. What about high sec? When will CCP pay attention to high sec and those that cannot spend their time in dangerous space?  This is somewhat how the day started, sparked by a question from an anonymous poster. Speaking about high sec, in general, is one of the hardest things to do. The amount of emotion wrapped around the topic is staggering. There are people who want to stay in high sec and nothing will make them leave. There are people who want no one to stay in high sec and wish to cripple everything about it. There are people in between, but the two extremes are large and emotional in discussion. My belief is simple. If a player wishes to live in high sec, I do not believe that anything will make them leave that is not their own curiosity. I do not believe that we can beat people out of high sec or destroy it until they go to other areas of space. Sometimes, I think we forget that every player has the option to not log back in. We want them to log

And back again

My very slow wormhole adventure continues almost as slowly as I am terminating my island in Animal Crossing.  My class 3 wormhole was not where I wanted to be. I was looking for a class 1 or 2 wormhole. I dropped my probes and with much less confusion scanned another wormhole. I remembered to dscan and collect my probes as I warped to the wormhole. I even remembered to drop a bookmark, wormholes being such good bookmark locations later. My wormhole told me it was a route into low sec. I tilted my head. How circular do our adventures go. Today might be the day to die and that too is okay. That mantra dances in the back of my head these days. Even if someone mocks me, what does that matter? Fattening someone's killboard is their issue not mine. So I jumped through and found myself in Efa in Khanid, tucked on the edge of high sec and null sec. What an interesting little system.  Several connections to high sec. A connection to null sec. This must be quite the traffic system.    I am f
