A Change of View

I tend not to be a person that customizes their interface much. When I started playing Eve I looked around at the various options and I found one very early on.

Combine ships and items into station services.

It makes this happen:

I have absolutely no idea why this is not an automatic setting. It keeps your ships and your items right at hand. I think it would have solved a lot of the rage when the unified inventory was first introduced simply because people 'lost' their stuff. I've showed this to a few people off and on. I just showed it to a vet who was ranting about the UI and he was like, "Oh. This is better."

Note: The Cynabal does not come with the setting.

I remember a stat that only 12% of people use it. I may be absolutely wrong. However, it stayed with me because it seemed like a very small number to use something that was very useful in my opinion. And, isn't that what opinions are for? To try to force everyone to use things exactly as you do? This makes perfect sense to me. I think it should be a default setting. I also think that it would be more intuitive to new players who need to access their 'inventory'.

Or, maybe I'm just weird and the only person that likes this. But, that's okay. Everyone should like it. Everyone.

  1. oh, interesting. didn't know about that. It's usefulness for me will depend on how good the filter is though..

  2. It won't show up from the character selection screen. You need to be logged in with a specific character and hit esc before it will. Just an FYI.

    1. Sure it will (or it should). I've been using this for years and as long as I'm docked at log-off, the tabs automatically show up on log-in.

    2. Perhaps once you've done it for the first time and is then active. But for someone who has never had it on before it doesn't.

  3. Last week I lost all of my user settings for the first time in four years, had to start from scratch with overview and all the custom settings. When I logged back in I literally couldn't find my ships! I've had the "combine" option selected for as long as I've been playing Eve - was weird not seeing it.

I used to be the default a long time ago, I can't imagine living without it tbh :)

    2. Feh! You think you know dancing? Why back in my day, now we, we, knew dancing.

  5. Uh, sorry but I REJECT YOUR REALITY AND SUBSTITUTE MY PWN!

I initially used the joined services and ships... learned to hate it TBH. But then again I have a full 17" screen that, while in space, I can spread out my Cargo Hold / Overview and People & Places and Chat screens on... And when in station I have Cargo Hold and Station Hangar and Chat and Station Services all open with PLENTY of ROOM to search and work...
You know, the way EVERYONE should... =P

    1. I minimize my chatscreen layout and other informational windows for screen shots.

I also only open people and places if I need to make a bookmark in warp.

  6. Holy crap where has that setting been my whole Eve career. Can't wait to get home tonight and set it.

  7. Been in the game since beta, at one point that was the only way to view your inventory. They took it away briefly when they did the UI but after many complaints brought it back.

  8. I found that checkbox and tried it... but I couldn't understand why anyone would put up with such a narrow view. I have a big wide inventory window so that I can see all my spreadsheet columns. ;)
(I also have it set to list view, so I don't see the item pictures at all.)

    1. You can stretch the station services panel if you want it wider.

  9. On any new install (or settings clearing), this is the first thing I change in my settings, before even importing my Overview.

The Charm of the Familar

With a few picked up a shifts at work due to the holidays. I pondered logging in but I didn't have the energy to do so. Being able to say no to logging in is pleasant. Just as my youngest puppy interrupts me every fifteen minutes to pee, going to sleep instead of staying up is also pleasant. I had a lot of short slept nights when I was active in a corporation.

My next plan has been to learn how to scan again. The new map is in and I need to refresh my scanning skills. My hold is full of probes. My ship appears to be reasonably set up. I remembered how to hit my F key to cloak. In fact, I hit it a bit to fast. I need to get the ebb and flow of the tic back down.

I am also rusty in my paranoia. I idly switch to another window to research breadbowls and the soup I want to make later. Then I remember I am sitting, decloaked, off of a gate somewhere. Whoops. I did figure out a breadbowl recipe and soup as well.

The question was where do I relearn to scan? I need somewhere off the beate…

CSMX - Post #20

Summer is here and CCP is very much out of the office. Sion made a good point in wondering why everyone leaves Iceland when it has its best weather. What it means is that all is mostly quiet on the dev blog front. There are some things happening but the dev blogs and news announcements have not yet happened. The skill points were delivered on Tuesday so yay for unallocated skill points.

Over in CSM chat, there has been a lot of back and forth about sov and measuring the impact and success of things so far. I can say that CCP and the CSM are watching it. The pros and cons are coming in pretty hot and heavy. Some are being looked at now. Some have to see how things are going and if and how the direction needs to be tweaked.

In my corner, I'm starting to gather things together. The summit is in seven or so weeks. In between then and now I need to gather up my question list and write down a few topics of discussion. I'm starting now because I have personal vacation at the end of A…

My Skill Queue went empty

The thing I miss most is having mail. When I log in I often check that line to see if I have mail. Unfortunately, I do not. I am not surprised. There is no reason for me to have mail. Yet, I do miss it.
In some ways having regular eve-mail was the moment that I was most connected. I had people to talk with and engage in. It was the closest I've ever been to having a normal social level that I was comfortable with. This shows you how introverted I am that eve-mail filled up my social meter.
I log in and look around. Normally, I am looking for the people that I do not have other social contacts with. It is very, very easy to lose those relationships. The binding glue of the game has dissolved and friendship, as an adult, can take work. Even in this information time. Eve gave me things to talk about. Without it, I remember that I don't talk very much. Unless it is about dogs and driving my co-workers crazy when people come to me for advice they won't follow.
Since I logged …
