The Unpainted Corner

I was asked, "What rigs will I get for my freighters first?"

I admit, the moment I learned that freighters would get rigs I immediately decided to get a hyperspatial velocity rig for both freighters. I then decided that the new hull rig will probably be a good second pick. However, I have to double check with the Rhea what will give me the most bang for my buck. I then started training my Jump Freighter pilot into T2 rigging skills. Go big, or in this case T2, or go home for the Rhea.

The reason why was simple. The first was speed and the second was to decrease my gankability. I had no plans to carry more cargo than I have been carrying. I ever understand that I will probably take a cargo hit due to the access of cargo rigs. But, I know that people gank just because Rhea are expensive and to not armor it for those times I do have to move it access high sec seemed rebellious.

So, I am armoring my empty jump freighter to avoid random ganks from people who will gank it simply because it is expensive. And I wondered if gankers have painted themselves into a corner where the only way out will be across a series of nerf blocks that won't damage the wet paint.

I've been rolling around a thought for a few weeks now. The reason behind my freighter rig choices solidified it. It is a point that is a bit contentious. Mostly, because it is one of those topics that tends not to promote good discussion. It is not that the topic does not need to be discussed. It is because it is a volatile, emotionally charged topic. Yet, I very well understand how helpless I am as I haul things. I have spent the time to max out on my skills that will improve my durability for that very reason. It is a time when fractions of a second will stand between me and losing a six billion ISK investment.

The Nosy Gamer has expressed irritation at the changes to the Procurer and Skiff. The speed changes wil cause him more work. They are there to give a greater option to the miners to avoid the popularity of miner bumping. On that same note, the great barge buff was created to give miners an option to tank their ships enough to avoid ganks. Now, with the freighters, people will cargo rig their loot pinatas and make themselves even easier to kill, perhaps.

The ability for someone to tank themselves to safety is a good one. The fact that people will choose not to amazes me but I am glad that it happens. There is a fine balance when it comes to ganking. To ask people to respect their ability to gank and be responsible with it will probably not happen. To create reasonable pathways for people to avoid being ganked will therefore continue to happen. To allow people to make irresponsible decisions must often happen.

Yet, buff and nerf tend to go hand and hand. For freighters, they will sacrifice their cargo load for armor or their armor for cargo load. For gankers? They may have to sacrifice their efficiency. Perhaps, "because it is expensive" may not be as common a motivator and the loot pinatas will be the focus if efficiency or ISK gain is the actual goal. Of course, some will explain to me that they are made of gold and they will continue to do what they wish.

There will always be for fun ganking. It may simply decrease a bit more. Maybe the paint will dry faster than the corner shrinks. I don't know. I may not fully understand the motivation behind much of the non-profit ganking.

  1. I've been mulling it over as well, decided I'd better go for tank as well. T2 rigs is good idea though, didn't even cross my mind.

  2. Just a small correction on the Skiff. The Skiff is not receiving a speed boost, just the Procurer.

One of my big irritants with the change is that at last year's Fanfest, CCP Fozzie told me that the switch from grav sites to ore sites was not a big deal if a miner just remains aligned. This year, CCP will make it more difficult to stay aligned.

    1. Hmm. I need to reread cuz I read at one point Skiff was getting speed to. But who knows where that was now.

Would mining laser range buffs help off set the speed vs align issue?

  3. I'm really looking forward to playing with fits in EVE HQ. Trimarks are a multiplier on top of existing armor HPs, and given that the Obelisk starts at 22.5K and the Anshar at 27K, the EHP will be hilarious. :-)

  4. " I don't know. I may not fully understand the motivation behind much of the non-profit ganking."

I gank, and not for profit but rather for principle.
Of course I could not do this if I did not have industry/market alts... (or am I a ganking alt?). The generous reimbursement program of the CAUSE helps as well.

Just think what you would do if you were not at all concerned or needing to make a profit? What would then motivate you to play?
Having a "CAUSE" makes it all worthwhile.

    1. Ahh, but I play simply because I enjoy it. If your cause motivates you I may not understand that motivation but I do understand that you have a driving factor.

But it isy nature to want to try to understand what I do not.

  5. It seems to me that miner ganking is balanced. Miners, with the ship and fitting choices available, get to choose how exactly how they want to balance risk vs reward; gankers, in turn, can still gank any mining ship they chose, but they have to decide if the opportunity cost is worth it.

Freighter drivers, on the other hand, didn't have a lot of options before Kronos. I like that they're getting fitting options instead of a straight HP buff, because that introduces the same risk v. reward choices that miners face. We'll see fewer cautious freighters ganked, but also more comedy killmails from idiots.

Maybe one day!

It was a random question that I knew the answer of. I have 'Sugar' as a keyword so it highlights green and catches my attention. This made me chuckle. Maybe I'll have to go and see what it is like to shoot a ship one day? I could not help but smile. Basi suggested that I put my Titan killmail in my bio and assert my badassery. I figure, naw. It was a roll of the dice that landed me that kill mail. It doesn't define me as a person. Bios are interesting. The idea of a biography is a way to personalize your account. You can learn a lot about a person by what they choose to put in their bio

Taboo Questions

Let us talk contentious things. What about high sec? When will CCP pay attention to high sec and those that cannot spend their time in dangerous space?  This is somewhat how the day started, sparked by a question from an anonymous poster. Speaking about high sec, in general, is one of the hardest things to do. The amount of emotion wrapped around the topic is staggering. There are people who want to stay in high sec and nothing will make them leave. There are people who want no one to stay in high sec and wish to cripple everything about it. There are people in between, but the two extremes are large and emotional in discussion. My belief is simple. If a player wishes to live in high sec, I do not believe that anything will make them leave that is not their own curiosity. I do not believe that we can beat people out of high sec or destroy it until they go to other areas of space. Sometimes, I think we forget that every player has the option to not log back in. We want them to log

And back again

My very slow wormhole adventure continues almost as slowly as I am terminating my island in Animal Crossing.  My class 3 wormhole was not where I wanted to be. I was looking for a class 1 or 2 wormhole. I dropped my probes and with much less confusion scanned another wormhole. I remembered to dscan and collect my probes as I warped to the wormhole. I even remembered to drop a bookmark, wormholes being such good bookmark locations later. My wormhole told me it was a route into low sec. I tilted my head. How circular do our adventures go. Today might be the day to die and that too is okay. That mantra dances in the back of my head these days. Even if someone mocks me, what does that matter? Fattening someone's killboard is their issue not mine. So I jumped through and found myself in Efa in Khanid, tucked on the edge of high sec and null sec. What an interesting little system.  Several connections to high sec. A connection to null sec. This must be quite the traffic system.    I am f
