Not being in the mood for the serious posting that I have been writing over the last several days I decided to collect Jita scams and see if there was anything legitimate on sale.
Legitimate things in Jita local? Actually, there are. I found courier contracts and ship and rig contracts that seemed pretty valid if not something I'd buy.
The focus of Jita being a big street bazaar is a fantastic one. The scammers are not so bad. The bot spammers are what hold it back. You cannot watch local to see what is there for the sheer spamming of local at full speed by characters that repush their advert every few seconds. Still, all of the normal scams are there and I find them amusing. I am also very, very careful about buttons. Looking at scams can turn into being a victim of a scam if one is not careful.
Sometimes these scams are complete pictures. They rely on prices looking good. This particular one needs the buyer to add one zero to many to find a deal and accept the contract instead of buying the item off the market at full price.
The margin trading scam is perhaps the oldest and most complicated for new players to figure out. I enjoy finding them when I know what they are. This one was a little fancier looking than many I have seen.
What was that? A market mistake? If you click on the yellow highlighted link you get and item and if you show info on the item you get to see that it is a fancy tag that sells for almost 300 million ISK. And if you look down on the buy orders you see...
Wow. What a mistake. They entered two extra zeros You can buy these and sell them at double the profit. Only that seems to good to be true. Let me extend my buyers tab a little bit.
Gosh. A minimum of 10 of them. Golly. Why don't I buy that stack of nine and one more and make a huge sale. This catches people two ways. It catches the people who don't have the minimum volume tab open. It also catches greedy people who think they can turn a quick buck. I don't have my minimum volume button open because I do not need it for what I do. For anyone looking to buy to resell it is rather important. In the land of margin scams they come in all shapes and sizes. The scammer sets the scene and walks the scamee in by the hand with a smile.

Regarding the margin scam it isn't just (or even mostly) about the minimum volume.
ReplyDeleteIt's about the scammer having the Margin Trading skill which allows him to enter orders while only placing roughly 1/5th the total ISK required into excrow. He then transfers most of of his ISK to another character so when someone buys out 10 of his overpriced sell orders with the intention of immediately reselling them to his even more overpriced buy order the resale transaction will fail.
