Doing Something: A Project

I realized that I was doing something wrong.

With Marc Scaurus ending his care of the Eve Blog pack I found myself waiting, worried, about who would take it over. Would they actually run it or would it die? Would it be updated? How would it change? What would be lost? What would be gained?

I found myself fretting over these things and waiting and watching. Waiting and watching. Wondering. And I realized, I was an idiot. Disgusted, I sat up, did a few web searches, and decided to do something about the situation.

Why was I waiting for someone else to take care of the situation? I felt that to lose the blog roll would be detrimental to the community. We barely have any places that list comprehensive lists of blogs. Most are based off of individual tastes or interests. We tend to prune off dead blogs or blogs that change in ways that are no longer compatible for us. EveBloggers.Com is just a resource. It isn't personal. And that is very important. For good or for bad, all of the blogs out there are part of the game. They are the history of Eve. The history of the individuals. I did offer to take EveBloggers.Com but I don't assume or expect to get it.

A blog isn't just about the blogger. It is about everyone the blogger writes about. It is about all of the people the blogger interacts with that helps to pick the letters and structure the words. Eve's blogs are part of Eve's written history. Dead or alive they all contain the past. And Eve is a game about its past as much as its future. It is a world where the players do things to each other and sometimes people record it. In this, we are all historians. I don't think that is the type of thing that should be missed.

Friday mornings and early afternoons tend to be quiet for me, in game. I really only had some store stocking to do. Nothing major or world shattering. I decided to just use Google for a start and structured a website focused around a handful of my wants. I've wanted to keep track of news articles about Eve. I've wanted to work on a more comprehensive resource list for Eve. I want Blogs not to be lost about Eve. I want. I want. I want.

I did.

It isn't anything fancy or spectacular. I picked Google sites to start the process and create the seed of a new, simple website. Beta phase or whatever it is called this day when something is a work in progress but still usable.

I named it New Eden Source. I'm not in love with the name yet but it is a starting point. I'll see if I can get the basics completed and fleshed out first. I'm not trying to be a news site or anything fancy. I just decided that if I wanted this stuff saved and I thought that blogs have value that I should go forth and do it instead of sitting around hoping someone else will do what I want. I expect EveBloggers to change when it changes hands and often people prune dead blogs. I wanted to save them before that happened. And more places with the same information can't hurt. Having all the eggs in one portals basket may be nice as a focus but bad if something happens to it.

That's my weekend project in a nutshell. I'm skimming blogs and plucking links as I find them. I went through and checked every link that I added. I put a note if they are active or inactive or haven't posted in a while. Some people I know post once every 3-6 months.  The dead links and the links to things that seemed to have nothing to do with Eve I edited out. There were few of them. I decided, when I wrote this post up, that I'd been at it for eight hours and I could take a break for the day. I'm pleased with my early process.

Special thanks to Foo for the motivation.

  1. I think it looks great so far and the name fits what it is just fine.

While I am one to cull inactive blogs from my reading list I like how you've listed whether or not the blogs are active/inactive. It makes finding blogs that are more up to date easier while also leaving all the older information readily available.

Despite what people say about evebloggers and the eve blog pack, those were my main sources for finding the blogs that I read and all the guides I was able to look up.

    Thanks for doing this!

  3. Navigating on mobile devices is a bit dodgy. Maybe sort by catagory- Trading, PvP, PvE, Piracy, Mining, Exploration etc etc.

  4. Thanks for the shoutout.

Your list is great, and looks better than mine.

A request as you add blogs. if you could in some way or another mark the dates you added them.

If nothing else, for all new entries, including Added on ...
That way, those perusing your list can keep an eye out for blogs to add.

@Anonymous : don't underestimate the effort Sugar has already put in. Adding categories to blogs is an undertaking all in itself.

The tasks to do this, and anyone (including anonymous) can do it.
    * go through Sugar's list,
    * suggest one or more categories for each blog
    * keep those categories up to date as blog emphasis changes
    * Mail this list to someone. Whether that be to Sugar directly (assuming she wants have a second set of links), or evemail to DoToo Foo.

The category list is entirely 'doable'; it just takes effort.
I am already very happy to see the new lists.

I second the notion that categories would be very nice.

  8. Great site Sugar, Kudos!

And you know, when I read Marc's position on this my first reaction was; Effin Goons... He IS an Editor for Mittens Press and I am sorry, but ANYONE who blogs would not be shelving the List and the Pack if he cared... no, he thought he could shelve it due to apathy... glad he was so very wrong.

My second reaction was; I wonder just how many new 'Lists' we were going to end up with in a month or so? (ATM 3 I know of) =]

And I'm already on yours... Awwwwwww... shucks, I so flattered.

Maybe one day!

It was a random question that I knew the answer of. I have 'Sugar' as a keyword so it highlights green and catches my attention. This made me chuckle. Maybe I'll have to go and see what it is like to shoot a ship one day? I could not help but smile. Basi suggested that I put my Titan killmail in my bio and assert my badassery. I figure, naw. It was a roll of the dice that landed me that kill mail. It doesn't define me as a person. Bios are interesting. The idea of a biography is a way to personalize your account. You can learn a lot about a person by what they choose to put in their bio

Taboo Questions

Let us talk contentious things. What about high sec? When will CCP pay attention to high sec and those that cannot spend their time in dangerous space?  This is somewhat how the day started, sparked by a question from an anonymous poster. Speaking about high sec, in general, is one of the hardest things to do. The amount of emotion wrapped around the topic is staggering. There are people who want to stay in high sec and nothing will make them leave. There are people who want no one to stay in high sec and wish to cripple everything about it. There are people in between, but the two extremes are large and emotional in discussion. My belief is simple. If a player wishes to live in high sec, I do not believe that anything will make them leave that is not their own curiosity. I do not believe that we can beat people out of high sec or destroy it until they go to other areas of space. Sometimes, I think we forget that every player has the option to not log back in. We want them to log

And back again

My very slow wormhole adventure continues almost as slowly as I am terminating my island in Animal Crossing.  My class 3 wormhole was not where I wanted to be. I was looking for a class 1 or 2 wormhole. I dropped my probes and with much less confusion scanned another wormhole. I remembered to dscan and collect my probes as I warped to the wormhole. I even remembered to drop a bookmark, wormholes being such good bookmark locations later. My wormhole told me it was a route into low sec. I tilted my head. How circular do our adventures go. Today might be the day to die and that too is okay. That mantra dances in the back of my head these days. Even if someone mocks me, what does that matter? Fattening someone's killboard is their issue not mine. So I jumped through and found myself in Efa in Khanid, tucked on the edge of high sec and null sec. What an interesting little system.  Several connections to high sec. A connection to null sec. This must be quite the traffic system.    I am f
