Let There be Color

"I really wan't to get a Scythe to mine in?"
"Why?"
"Because they look badass.  I just don't like that if you want to mine, you get the same ship as every other miner."
"If you are upset that special snowflake mining is hard... uhh... try a battleship."
I was trying to give a plausible solution to a terrible desire.  My first thought was the head desk over it but then I decided that was the wrong approach   Of course the mining frigate to those that have spent hours and weeks in sub-optimal mining conditions waiting to get into optimal mining conditions (those of you thrashing and bleeding from the ears over the thought should get some cotton balls and a calming cup of tea) it is silly to tun back around and throw all of that away.

However, he has never experienced life without a mining frigate.  That two week gap is enormous.  I have been playing with the tutorials and using the venture as my primary ship.  It is amazing and chews through the tutorials like butter.  I can mine, blow NPCs out of space, do distributions missions and all without breaking a sweat.

But this is about originality.  While the Venture is original and new and different for me, for a week old character undocking there are dozens of them around the newbie station, in the newbie system belts, and being flown everywhere.  They are not new, special, or interesting.

People want to be Special Snowflakes and Eve does not give them this.   Babbling about unique ships the other week, I pointed out that most of us hold our specialness on the inside.  People want it on the outside.  Players have been cooing for something as simple as corporation logos.  Corporation logos which would be visually small and very personal but we'd like them anyway please.

We need ship skins.  When I was going to say something snarky about 'who cares' about his ship I was struck by an image of me buying dye packs in Diablo III so that I could create this blue and white armor effect.  It was a complete waste of gold coinage but damn, I felt better when it was done.

(I do not know who authored this Apoc to give them credit)

Diablo didn't let me put a Hello Kitty skin on.  Nor does CCP need to give us the ability to have a flesh colored Thorax.  But people want some form of individuality and personal choice. Its been commented on before by others.  CCP has been steadily putting new ship skins into the files.  They haven't released anything yet.  The people who like to data drive are constantly pulling up a stunning array of skins for the ships.

Customs skins don't have to be personally custom.  People would swoon over a small bit of personal input.  "My throax is blue and silver," would work fine.  It doesn't have to be pink, or glitter, or even My Little Pony Brony inspired.  A thimble of personal choice has the potential to make all of the difference.

  1. I agree totally with this. The biggest problem with allowing customizable ship skins is the servers/networks/connection. It increases the amount of data which needed to be loaded and rendered on the grid. Now I think this could be lessened by making it an option in the game settings wether or not you want it turned on or off. The only people who would stand to gain the most are the High/low sec pilots. Null sec pilots who frequently engage in blob warfare would have a huge problem even with a little extra data needing to be rendered and loaded. Fights would lag and take forever and people would be generally dissatisfied with it after the first couple weeks, if that. Low sec pilots would see the least amount of problems with this as most lowsec fleets are small gang fleets or solo. FW pilots and incursions might see some issues though. High-sec pilots would have to turn it off in certain systems (like the Trade hubs) to keep lag down all around.

Other then the fact that I dont think we will see this happen in at least a couple years, I would love to see CCP find a way to make it work.

    1. Yeah, that I think is going to be the biggest problem for customization, but Sugar Kyle makes a good point.. a limited set of simple patterns like geometric, or stripes, or zig-zag lines, etc. would be simple to do and not be a drag on the server.

As far as the timeline goes, the fact that they are working on it now, and that the whole V3 process was supposed to make that possible, makes me hopeful that it will be sooner than a couple years down the road.

  2. The faction hulls are already distinguishable from the standard ones.
Want a shiny? Fly a Machariel, what's the problem?

p.s. Ventures are really sweet. 50m signature, 2 warp-stabs = completely bomber-ignorant and gankable only with dictors/heavy dictors. With a warp-stab fitted in low even a faction scram on a cloaky-proteus could be ignored.
And that shit costs way less than a gas-harvesting cruiser, so they can be easily replaced without serious walletpunches.

    1. Its not about shiny its about individuality. Many people look for it and want it. It is the small hooks to help hold new players to the game and add appeal and options.

The Charm of the Familar

With a few picked up a shifts at work due to the holidays. I pondered logging in but I didn't have the energy to do so. Being able to say no to logging in is pleasant. Just as my youngest puppy interrupts me every fifteen minutes to pee, going to sleep instead of staying up is also pleasant. I had a lot of short slept nights when I was active in a corporation.

My next plan has been to learn how to scan again. The new map is in and I need to refresh my scanning skills. My hold is full of probes. My ship appears to be reasonably set up. I remembered how to hit my F key to cloak. In fact, I hit it a bit to fast. I need to get the ebb and flow of the tic back down.

I am also rusty in my paranoia. I idly switch to another window to research breadbowls and the soup I want to make later. Then I remember I am sitting, decloaked, off of a gate somewhere. Whoops. I did figure out a breadbowl recipe and soup as well.

The question was where do I relearn to scan? I need somewhere off the beate…

CSMX - Post #20

Summer is here and CCP is very much out of the office. Sion made a good point in wondering why everyone leaves Iceland when it has its best weather. What it means is that all is mostly quiet on the dev blog front. There are some things happening but the dev blogs and news announcements have not yet happened. The skill points were delivered on Tuesday so yay for unallocated skill points.

Over in CSM chat, there has been a lot of back and forth about sov and measuring the impact and success of things so far. I can say that CCP and the CSM are watching it. The pros and cons are coming in pretty hot and heavy. Some are being looked at now. Some have to see how things are going and if and how the direction needs to be tweaked.

In my corner, I'm starting to gather things together. The summit is in seven or so weeks. In between then and now I need to gather up my question list and write down a few topics of discussion. I'm starting now because I have personal vacation at the end of A…

TCS: Sugar's Non-Technical Guide to Her Low Sec Market

Gevlon shocked me by featuring my store in his blog, yesterday. My entire project has been something I mostly scraped together and have bumbled through to the best of my ability and sense. Early on, I started a naming dynamic to my posts so that people could avoid the blogs about the store. These blogs are titled TCS. Also, if you search for TCS those particular blogs are available.

I decided to create a more cohesive naming strategy because someone said, “I don’t know how interested your readers will be in your market posts.” I didn’t either. I wasn't going to not write them because I write about whatever interests me. It seemed that a naming convention would correct the situation. However, I’ve started to receive a trickle of eve-mail and e-mail about what I am doing. Sometimes people ask me for advice on how to approach their own low sec market or what they should pick and choose or just how to pick and choose.

Cheradenine Harper asked me about moving forward into the wider mark…
